“You feel a little bit embarrassed, but you get over it”: EFL students’ beliefs and emotions about speaking

Drawing on positive psychology, i.e. the study of how people flourish and thrive, (MacIntyre, Gregersen Mercer, 2016), this paper aims to analyse elements which learners regard as most important have enjoyable experiences in English classroom. The participants are first-year university students enrolled an for Specific Purposes course that were inquired about their life-long trajectories studying ESP followed a communicative approach. data obtained through open-ended question from questionnaire (pre- post-); eight semi-structured interviews; four focus groups. answers open-response items analysed at macro-level Domain Taxonomic Coding (Saldaña, 2016) afterwards interviews groups content-analysed deepen understanding students’ responses micro-level. analysis reveals oral activities aspect value positively; yet, some report negative emotions due lack practice beliefs speaking tasks own capabilities. Findings suggest extensive along course, well supportive teacher, classroom atmosphere effective management can increase self-confidence positivity.
